“IAF Eyes Next-Gen Firepower: Plans to Procure 2-3 Squadrons of Advanced Fifth-Generation Fighter Jets from Global Partners”

“IAF Gears Up for Major Upgrade with Plans to Procure 2–3 Squadrons of Fifth-Generation Fighter Jets from Global Allies”

In a major move to bolster its aerial combat capabilities, the Indian Air Force (IAF) is actively exploring the procurement of two to three squadrons of fifth-generation fighter jets from foreign sources. The aim is to plug the operational gap until India’s homegrown Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) becomes combat-ready.

Each IAF squadron typically comprises 18 to 20 fighter jets, indicating that India is considering an interim purchase of approximately 40 to 60 state-of-the-art fighter aircraft.

Strategic Upgrade Amid Border Challenges

According to defense officials, the IAF recently presented a comprehensive proposal to the central government, laying out its future requirements to stay ahead of regional adversaries. The plan has gained urgency due to China’s accelerated advancements in sixth-generation fighter technology and the potential deployment of fifth-generation jets to Pakistan.

To address these developments, a high-level committee headed by Defence Secretary RK Singh has recommended the urgent induction of fifth-generation fighters to maintain India’s deterrence and operational edge, especially across the northern and western frontiers.

US and Russia in the Fray

India is currently in discussions with two major defense partners—the United States and Russia. While the US has offered the stealthy F-35 Lightning II, Russia has pitched its Su-57 stealth fighter for Indian consideration.

Though no formal decision has been taken, diplomatic and defense-level dialogues are reportedly underway. Interestingly, India had earlier opted out of the Fifth Generation Fighter Aircraft (FGFA) program with Russia but retains the option to re-enter the collaboration.

Dual Approach: 5th-Gen Imports and 4.5+ Gen Make in India

Parallel to the fifth-gen procurement talks, India is also pursuing a mega plan to manufacture 114 modern 4.5+ generation fighters under a foreign collaboration and Make in India framework. A government-to-government deal is likely to be pursued once the selection process concludes.

This two-pronged strategy aims to ensure that the IAF remains battle-ready and technologically superior, especially amid rising regional tensions and evolving aerial threats.
